Finite Precision is a small company that is thinking big – and hitting the mark early. And three, without question, is this company’s lucky number. This 3D die design and simulation business serving automotive stamping clients is a three-man band that in just three months has tripled its initial sales projections. And if you ask this trio how they’ve done it, they’ll modestly tell you with rich experience, long hours and the advantages of their 3D design software – CATIA V5. The partners are quick to point out that Finite Precision’s competitors are all larger. And they know that means they must be quicker, more efficient and able to handle large volumes of work effectively.
STARTING BIG “Being a small shop, we knew we needed software that was going to help us think big and act big, right from the start,” says Chris Saylor, Sales & Operations at Finite Precision. “Our prior backgrounds gave us experience with other software, so we knew going into the start-up exactly what we wanted and would work best for us.”
Saylor says Finite Precision’s quick success has been a product of not only the partners’ expertise, but being able to apply that expertise with software that adapts well to the environment.

Saylor says that with the 3D tools of CATIA V5, the team can take a design from concept to visual form for the customer quicker and with higher quality than standard 2D techniques.
“We can have a good 50% review for the customer in a couple of weeks, which is huge for our industry,” he says.
The advantages of speed, precision and quality, Saylor says, are significant, especially during the quote process.
“Our customers need things turned around quickly, because they also have to build that tool,” he says. “They need the design done as quickly and accurately as possible, because the goal is obviously to be able to take that design and apply it right to your build process.”
Saylor says it’s a great feeling to be able to “wow” customers and make them fast believers in Finite Precision’s capabilities.
“With any other 3D software we would not be able to achieve the level of production and quality we are now,” he says. “We’re making believers quickly and CATIA V5 is helping us accomplish this.”
EASE OF USE A KEY ADVANTAGE But as a small company, the partners at Finite Precision are putting in long hours to meet their customers’ design needs. But Opatic says with CATIA the long days don’t feel that way.
“With CATIA, it’s fun and easy,” he says. “Time flies by and the fatigue level that you would expect just isn’t there.”
Although Finite Precision is a new company, the partners have years of past experience in the industry with other software. And they say that other products they have used never offered them the level of quality and usability they’ve experienced so far with CATIA V5.
Mike Brower, 3D Designer/Simulation Specialist, says CATIA V5’s history capabilities make engineering changes a breeze.
“It’s easy to get new data, pull it into the design and make corrections,” he says. “The history allows you to update things automatically and being able to reapply new data reduces errors.”
But CATIA V5’s surfacing tools are Brower’s personal favorite.
“CATIA V5’s surfacing capabilities are the best I’ve ever used,” he says. “Communication between CATIA and our simulation software is just awesome. There are hardly any flaws in the surfaces and it just makes my job in simulation so much easier.
“With other software, I always had to clean up geometry when bringing in a simulation,” Brower adds. “And with CATIA, I really don’t have to do that. The surfacing portion of CATIA is just excellent – I can’t say enough good things about it.”
